The MONA Frankton Field Watch: A Tribute to Heroes
At MONA Watches, every watch tells a story. That’s why our field watch, the “Frankton,” is inspired by the incredible mission carried out by British commandos during World War II, known as “Operation Frankton.” In tribute to this heroic courage, we have incorporated details of this mission into the dial of our watch, recalling the audacity of the soldiers and their quest for freedom. The story of Operation Frankton, recounted below, is thus engraved in each model of the Frankton watch, embodying a military heritage and unwavering determination.
Operation Frankton: A Tribute to Heroes
Military Operation Frankton, also known as “Cockleshell Heroes,” was a mission by British commandos during World War II.
This daring operation had a significant impact on the war and has gone down in history as an example of courage and ingenuity.
On a cold and freezing night on 7th December 1942, a group of 12 Royal Marines were dropped by a submarine off Montalivet near the Gironde estuary in specially designed canoes called "Cockleshells".
The commandos had to paddle approximately 100 km, facing harsh weather conditions and enemy patrols, with the aim of reaching and infiltrating the port of Bordeaux in occupied France to sabotage German shipping.
By 1942, almost all of Europe was under the Nazi thumb...
At the beginning of the second quarter of 1942, despite the blockade by the British Navy and Air Force, the port of Bordeaux was still supplied with rare metals, latex and tropical products.
Winston CHURCHILL, concerned about the increasing number of German "Blockade Runners" and the situation global tasked Lord Louis MOUNTBATTEN, then head of joint operations, to intervene.
Faced with the risk of losing too many lives, Lord MOUNTBATTEN and Anthony EDEN (Foreign Minister) opposed the bombing of the port by Royal Air Force planes.
They therefore agreed on a special commando mission which would be named: "Operation FRANKTON" also known as: "Cockleshells" "Operation Coque de Noix"
